Samantha Finlay walks on fire
12 Jun 2014
Braving the burning coals, Level 2 NVQ hairdressing student Samantha Finlay, walked across fire and broken glass at a recent event for NIDYA (Northern Ireland Deaf Youth Association). Samantha attends our Rosemary Street, Belfast campus and has been training with The Academy Hair & Beauty Training School for two years. Inspired by her own experience, Samantha volunteers with NIDYA (Northern Ireland Deaf Youth Association), assisting with organising fundraising events as a member of the fundraising committee.
Recently she threw herself in at the deep end, signing up for a Firewalk, with her fundraising efforts going towards the senior youth club, of which Samantha is a member. Her fundraising activities included sponsor sheets and the generous donations of passers-by on the day. Along with 12 other young adults from the senior youth club, Samantha travelled to the YMCA in Newcastle, Co. Down on 12
th June where a Firewalk and broken glass were set up for the volunteers to walk across barefoot. Brave Samantha took the risk for an association that she fully believes in and for the young adults that she is so involved with and has such empathy for. When discussing her experience with The Academy Hair & Beauty Training School Samantha was full of praise and thanks for the work of Cassie Campbell who arranged the event on behalf of NIDYA. The feedback was fantastic and everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed the experience on the day.
Samantha’s efforts will continue as she is currently organising a jumble sale to take place in November 2014, with all funds raised going towards the work of NIDYA. She hopes to get even more involved with NIDYA in future months and years. Well done Samantha!
